Nine Worlds:

the universe is divided into nine worlds, which are connected by the World Tree, Yggdrasil. Each of these worlds is home to different creatures, beings, and gods. The nine worlds are:

  1. Asgard: Asgard is the world of the Aesir gods. This is where Odin, Thor, and many other gods reside. Asgard is the most well-known world in Norse mythology, and it is often depicted as a great golden city.

  2. Vanaheim: Vanaheim is the world of the Vanir gods. The Vanir are associated with fertility, prosperity, and the natural world. The goddess Freya, who is associated with love, sex, and fertility, is one of the most important deities in Vanaheim.

  3. Midgard: Midgard is the world of humans. This is where most of the stories in Norse mythology take place. Midgard is connected to Asgard by Bifrost, the rainbow bridge.

  4. Jotunheim: Jotunheim is the world of the giants, who are often portrayed as enemies of the gods. The giantess Skadi, who is associated with winter and hunting, is one of the most important figures in Jotunheim.

  5. Svartalfheim: Svartalfheim is the world of the dark elves, or dwarves. The dwarves are known for their craftsmanship, and they are said to have created many of the magical items used by the gods.

  6. Alfheim: Alfheim is the world of the light elves. The light elves are associated with beauty, magic, and creativity.

  7. Helheim: Helheim is the world of the dead. It is ruled by the goddess Hel, who is often depicted as a half-dead, half-alive figure. Those who die of old age or illness are said to go to Helheim.

  8. Niflheim: Niflheim is the world of ice and mist. It is home to many dangerous creatures, including the dragon Nidhogg, who gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil.

  9. Muspelheim: Muspelheim is the world of fire. It is ruled by the fire giant Surtr, who is said to wield a sword that will bring about the end of the world. Muspelheim is also the home of many other fire giants and demons.

These nine worlds are said to be connected by the branches and roots of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. The gods and other creatures move between the worlds using the branches of the tree, which extend into each of the worlds. The world of the gods, Asgard, is said to be at the top of the tree, while the underworld, Helheim, is at the roots. The nine worlds are a central part of Norse mythology, and they are often referenced in stories, poems, and songs.

Frigg's nine handmaidens:

  1. Fulla: Fulla was Frigg's closest confidante and her handmaiden of plenty. She was associated with abundance and fertility and was often depicted carrying Frigg's casket or coffer.

  2. Gna: Gna was the messenger of the gods and was known for her swift speed and grace. She was often sent on errands by Frigg and Odin and rode on the horse Hofvarpnir.

  2. Bylgja - Her name means "billow," and she is associated with the high, rolling waves of the sea. Bylgja is often associated with the treasures that lie beneath the waves, such as sunken ships and the precious gems and metals they contain. She is also seen as a protector of sailors, and it was believed that invoking her name would help to calm the stormy seas and ensure a safe voyage. In modern times, Bylgja has been incorporated into various forms of Norse-inspired neopaganism and spiritual practices. Some people believe that working with her energy can help to harness the power of the ocean and tap into their own inner strength and resilience

  3. Dröfn or Bára - Her name means foaming sea. Bára replaces Dröfn in a list of the daughter in Skáldskaparmál. Dröfn also appears as a common noun. According to Anthony Faulkes, Dröfn means "comber", whereas Bára translates to "wave" According to Andy Orchard, 'Dröfn means 'foaming sea'.

  4. Dufa - Wave

  5. Hefring or Hevring - The name Hefring may be derived from the Old Norse word "hefri," which means "to lift" or "to raise up." 6. Himinglæva - Transparent-on-top

  7. Hrönn - Wave

  8. Kólga - Her name means "cool or chill wave," and she is associated with the coldness of the sea. Some modern practitioners of Norse-inspired spirituality honor her as a goddess of the ocean, storms, and weather patterns. It was believed that invoking her name could help to protect sailors and other seafarers from the dangers of the ocean. Kólga's name and association with coldness and chill may also reflect her connection to winter and the changing of the seasons. In some interpretations, she is seen as a goddess of transition and transformation, helping to usher in the darker, colder months of the year and preparing the land and its inhabitants for the coming of spring.

  9. Uðr - Wave. Her name means "wave or billow," and she is associated with the waves in general. She is described as a powerful goddess who can create massive waves and stir up storms. Her association with waves and billows may also reflect her connection to the ebb and flow of life, and the cyclical nature of existence.

The nine daughters of Rán are figures who are associated with the sea and its dangers.

The concept of the Nine Waves appears in several mythological and poetic sources in Norse mythology, and it generally refers to a series of nine oceanic waves that symbolize different aspects of the natural world and the human experience. While the precise meanings of the Nine Waves vary depending on the source and context, here is a general overview of what they represent:

  1. The Wave of Sound (Hljóð): This wave represents the initial sound that set the universe in motion and created the first vibrations of existence. It is associated with the beginning of time and the creation of the cosmos.

  2. The Wave of Sight (Sýn): This wave represents the visual aspect of the universe and is associated with light, color, and perception. It is often associated with the god Odin, who sacrificed one of his eyes to gain knowledge and wisdom.

  3. The Wave of Wind (Vind): This wave represents the elemental force of wind and the power of the natural world to shape and transform the landscape. It is often associated with the god Njord, who is the ruler of the wind and sea.

  4. The Wave of Fire (Logr): This wave represents the elemental force of fire and the power of destruction and transformation. It is often associated with the god Loki, who is known for his fiery nature and ability to bring chaos and change.

  5. The Wave of Flesh (Fjörm): This wave represents the physical body and the biological processes of growth, decay, and death. It is often associated with the goddess Hel, who rules over the realm of the dead and the cycles of life and death.

  6. The Wave of Memory (Minni): This wave represents the power of memory and the role it plays in shaping our perceptions of the world and our sense of self. It is often associated with the god Odin, who is known for his wisdom and knowledge of the past.

  7. The Wave of Desire (Þökk): This wave represents the power of desire and the role it plays in motivating human action and shaping the course of history. It is often associated with the goddess Freyja, who is associated with love, fertility, and desire.

  8. The Wave of Pain (Kval): This wave represents the experience of suffering and the role it plays in shaping human character and resilience. It is often associated with the god Tyr, who sacrificed his hand to bind the monstrous wolf Fenrir and prevent him from destroying the world.

  9. The Wave of Death (Ofnir): This wave represents the final stage of life and the passage into the afterlife. It is often associated with the goddess Hel and her realm of the dead.

Overall, the Nine Waves represent a holistic view of the natural world and the human experience, encompassing both the physical and spiritual dimensions of existence. While the precise meanings and associations of the Nine Waves may vary depending on the source, they are generally seen as a powerful symbol of the interconnectedness of all things and the ongoing cycles of creation, destruction, and renewal.

Heiðinns

One of the primordial Viking’s traditions was enjoying a mighty feast with the oldest alcoholic drink in the history of mankind known as mead. Whenever it's time for the Heiðinns to toast they bellow "Ves heillllll" which signals their comrades to drink up! A thunderous call that echoes throughout the great hall!

The first horn was to be drunk to Óðinn "for victory and power to the king", the second to the gods Njörðr and Freyr "for good harvests and for peace", and thirdly a beaker was to be drunk to the king himself. In addition, toasts were drunk to the memory of departed kinsfolk. This toast was called "minni [memorial toast]".

Ves heill und Jeg drinc heill.
