Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th has a complex history that blends superstition, religion, and numerology, giving it both historical and magickal significance.

Historical Origins:
Christian Influence: The fear surrounding Friday the 13th can be traced back to two separate but intertwined superstitions: the fear of Fridays and the number 13. In Christianity, Friday is often associated with ill-fated events, most notably the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which is traditionally believed to have occurred on a Friday. Additionally, the Last Supper had 13 guests, with Judas, the betrayer, being the 13th guest, further fueling the idea that 13 is an unlucky number.
Knights Templar: One of the most famous historical events linked to Friday the 13th happened in 1307, when King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest and persecution of the Knights Templar. This occurred on Friday, October 13, and many of the Templars were tortured and executed, leading to the association of this day with bad luck.
Numerology: In numerology, the number 12 is seen as a number of completeness (e.g., 12 months of the year, 12 zodiac signs), while 13 is viewed as irregular and disruptive. This transition from completeness to something unknown or unlucky has carried forward into various cultures.

Magickal Significance:
Liminal Space: Friday the 13th can be seen as a liminal or in-between space, making it a potent time for magick. In many traditions, liminal times and spaces are seen as particularly powerful for working with spirits, setting intentions, or crossing between worlds. It's thought that the "unluckiness" of this day can actually work in favor of those who practice witchcraft, as the energy is heightened.
Divine Feminine: The day is also associated with the Goddess and the Divine Feminine. Friday is named after Freyja (or Frigg in Norse mythology), the goddess of love, fertility, and magick. Thirteen is considered a sacred number in many goddess-based religions and traditions, as it corresponds to the number of lunar cycles in a year. Therefore, for those who honor the feminine aspects of divinity, Friday the 13th is a day to celebrate feminine power, intuition, and transformation.
Protection and Banishing Rituals: Since the day is often seen as a time when bad luck or negative energies are more prevalent, many witches use it for protection spells, banishing rituals, and cleansing practices. It can be a powerful day to break old patterns, release negative energies, or shield oneself from misfortune.

Friday the 13th’s magickal meanings emphasize empowerment, transformation, and using the day to work with heightened energies.
